Le mardi 3 juin 2025, la municipalité de Saint-André-d’Argenteuil a tenu une séance du conseil municipal pour le moins exceptionnelle. Ce ne sont pas les élus habituels qui ont mené la réunion, mais bien les élèves de 6e année de l’école primaire Saint-André. À l’initiative de la municipalité et en collaboration avec l’école, cette simulation citoyenne grandeur nature s’est déroulée dans le respect des règles d’une séance officielle, tout en mettant en valeur l’engagement des jeunes envers leur communauté.
Une expérience citoyenne enrichissante
Chaque élève a pris place au siège d’un conseiller ou d’une conseillère municipale, pendant que les élus, restés en retrait, soutenaient leurs remplaçants en appuyant les propositions et en assurant le bon déroulement de la séance. La présidence de l’assemblée a été brillamment assurée par Dylan St-Jean, qui a dirigé les discussions avec aplomb, en donnant la parole aux représentants de chaque district. Les jeunes ont abordé des enjeux concrets tout en respectant les règles de la démocratie municipale.
Cette activité avait pour objectif de sensibiliser les élèves au rôle des élus et aux responsabilités de la gouvernance locale. Ils ont ainsi pu mieux comprendre les attentes des citoyens et l’importance de la participation active dans la vie municipale. Les parents, les enseignants et les citoyens présents ont salué la qualité de la prestation et le sérieux avec lequel les jeunes ont rempli leur mandat.
Une démarche continue d’implication de la jeunesse
Ce n’est pas la première fois que la municipalité de Saint-André-d’Argenteuil ouvre ses portes à la jeunesse. En mai dernier, deux élèves de cette même école ont eu la chance de vivre une expérience hors du commun en devenant « pompiers d’un jour ». À bord d’un véritable camion, ils ont été accueillis à la caserne par les pompiers Lamoureux, Crevier et Masse, qui leur ont fait découvrir les équipements, les installations et les multiples facettes du métier. Une activité enrichissante, rendue possible grâce à l’engagement du Service de sécurité incendie de la municipalité.
Un symbole fort : la Chaise des générations
Fabriquée par des enfants et installée dans les lieux de pouvoir, la Chaise des générations représente la voix des jeunes. Elle agit comme un rappel tangible que chaque décision politique a un impact à long terme, particulièrement sur l’environnement et la qualité de vie des citoyens de demain. La présentation de M. Matthews, empreinte de pédagogie et de passion, a su captiver l’attention de tous.

Saint-André-d’Argenteuil: A Town Council Meeting Led by Grade 6 Students

On Tuesday, June 3, 2025, the municipality of Saint-André-d’Argenteuil held a most exceptional town council meeting. Instead of the usual elected officials, it was the Grade 6 students from Saint-André Elementary School who took the lead. Initiated by the municipality in collaboration with the school, this full-scale civic simulation followed the official rules of a real council meeting, while showcasing the students’ engagement with their community.
A Valuable Civic Experience
Each student took a seat normally occupied by a town councillor, while the actual elected officials remained on the sidelines, supporting their young counterparts and ensuring the meeting ran smoothly. The role of council chair was brilliantly handled by Dylan St-Jean, who confidently led the proceedings and gave the floor to each district representative. The students addressed real issues while respecting the procedures of municipal democracy.
The goal of the activity was to raise awareness among students about the role of elected officials and the responsibilities of local governance. Through this exercise, they gained a better understanding of citizen expectations and the importance of active participation in municipal life. Parents, teachers, and community members in attendance praised the students’ performance and the seriousness with which they fulfilled their duties.
A Commitment to Youth Engagement
This is not the first time the municipality of Saint-André-d’Argenteuil has welcomed youth into its institutions. Just last May, two students from the same school were given the rare opportunity to become “firefighters for a day.” Riding in a real fire truck, they were warmly welcomed at the station by firefighters Lamoureux, Crevier, and Masse, who introduced them to the equipment, facilities, and the many facets of the profession. This enriching activity was made possible thanks to the dedication of the municipal fire department.
A Powerful Symbol: The Generations Chair
One especially symbolic moment of the June 3 meeting was the presentation of the Generations Chair. Introduced by Mr. Steven Matthews, this project, inspired by the « Mothers Step In » movement (Mères au front), is meant to remind decision-makers of the importance of considering future generations in today’s choices.
Crafted by children and placed in decision-making spaces, the Generations Chair represents the voice of youth. It stands as a visible reminder that every political decision has long-term consequences, particularly for the environment and the quality of life of tomorrow’s citizens. Mr. Matthews’ heartfelt and educational presentation captivated the entire room.
A Model Worth Following
This extraordinary town council session was a resounding success. It highlighted the importance of youth involvement, offered students a concrete civic experience, and strengthened the bond between the municipality and its next generation of leaders.
Congratulations to the students of Saint-André Elementary School for their outstanding performance, and to everyone who contributed to making this initiative possible. Through this gesture, the municipality of Saint-André-d’Argenteuil reaffirms that the future of local democracy depends on educating and empowering its youth.
